Teela Ashtami | Tila Aetham | Teel Aetham

Teela Ashtami stands as a cherished culmination of the Shivratri festival, particularly revered by the Kashmiri Pandit community. This auspicious day falls on the 8th day of the bright fortnight of Phalgun Month, known as Phalguna Shukla Ashtami tithi. It serves as a momentous occasion where devotees fervently offer prayers to Lord Shiva along with homage to their other revered deities, illuminating temples and homes with the warm glow of diyas.

Among the age-old customs associated with Teela Ashtami, "Jaa Teen Teen" (tieng Kangri) held a special place in the hearts of the faithful. However, over time, this tradition has sadly faded into obscurity, becoming a relic of the past.

In various Northern Indian and Hindu calendars, Teela Ashtami is also known as "Masik Durgaashtami" in the month of Falgun, marking the commencement of "Holashtak," a significant period in Hindu tradition.

As we honor the spirit of Teela Ashtami, let us reflect on the rich cultural heritage it represents and strive to preserve and celebrate its significance for generations to come.

A very interesting write up !!! This day has also significance as on this day we used to remember our ancestors by paying tributes to them ! Our elders in Srinagar used to illuminate diya's in the memory of our ancestors in the evening at main doors and gates of our houses,as it was believed that our ancestors visit our homes on this day. We also used to take some lighted Diya's to the river ghat and would put these Diya on a grass cart and put them in the flow of the river Veyth ! It was always a  beautiful scene to look to these diyas flowing in the river in the dark night.
