How to deal with hot weather and stay cool?

Keeping yourself cool during hot weather is a challenge on its own. You can get dehydrated and can experience loo as well, which is also known as a heat stroke. Many people also feel frustrated in hot weather, so it becomes important to be cool to be calm. There are several ways to stay cool in hot weather and most of them are easy to use.

Ways to be cool in warm weather:

  1. Drink Lots of Water:
Water is important for keeping you cool during hot weather. It keeps the body cool and should be drunk even if you don't feel thirsty. You can check your hydration level to see the urine color.

If the color of your urine is darker than yellow, then it is probably an indication that dehydration is on its way, and that you require water immediately.

Also one should not drink cold drinks and cola, as these restrict the body to store water, and hence you feel more thirsty after some time of having some cold drinks. Similarly, drinking alcohol-rich drinks makes you more dehydrated, as your kidney tries to get rid of the excess alcohol in the body.

Have a good water bottle, such as a glass one, which is safe to store water, and have a target to complete at least 5 liters of water. And if you have to go somewhere, freeze the water bottle beforehand and you will be able to take it in the hot sun as well, and water will slowly melt, and you will be able to enjoy cool water for a longer duration of time.

You can even keep reminders on your phone to drink water if you forget to do the same. This way you will not miss or forget to drink water at any time of the day.

  2. Eat food that has a cooling effect:
Foods can also make you cool if you chose them carefully. This is because, as ingredients, food items have their character. Choose salads, fresh raw foods, vegetables, and fruits.

Also, having cool buttermilk will help you cool down your body, if you have come from hot weather. It may seem counter-intuitive, but eating spicy foods may cool you off. This is because when you have spicy food, you feel the sweat, and hence you can cool off immediately.

Ensure that you have smaller meals throughout the day and not large meals. Large meals require the body to work harder breaking everything down, which again makes you tired, and hence you may feel more hot.

  3. Stay out of the sun whenever possible:
Although this is commonsense, commonsense is not so common today, and I am also guilty of that. I move out in the sun when it's the hottest to buy groceries, to save evening time. But this is not correct if you want to save yourself from tanning and other heat-related issues.

It is better to limit your sun exposure between 10 AM to 4 PM each day during hot weather. It is better to schedule your activities, early in the morning or later in the afternoon. Especially we should not allow children or elderly people in the heat hours.

  4. Use a lot of sunscreens:
While sunscreen won't have a cooling effect, its protective effect is vital during the hot season. Sunscreen can help you be away from sub-burn, which can again lead to irritation on your skin and dehydration.

It is recommended to use sunscreens after every 4 hours when you are in sun. This will keep your skin from tanning too much and also save your skin from sunburn, and do be afraid of using sunscreens. Use as much as possible to cover all the exposed areas of your body.

  5. Go to places that are in shade:
So your kids want to go for a picnic in the bright sun?

Well, you can't say no, so ensure that you take them to a park or to a place which is nearby to some river so that you can cool off whenever required.

  6. Use table fans instead of ceiling fans:
This is important because ceiling fans bring hot air from the upper floors downwards, and when you use a table fan, you can circulate the air in the room itself. This also ensures that the room is cooler and also increases the efficiency of the air conditioner.

  7. Go to Malls or Public Places:
This is a great hack because when you are out you can go out for a movie in a mall. After all, they are cooler and have good air conditioning. Most of these places have central air conditioning and hence these are more cooler than your place.

  8. Wear light clothes:
This is again important because light clothes, like cotton help in keeping you cool for a longer duration of time. Having said that synthetic clothes are bad for hot weather because they trap sweat and cling to the body, making more irritation.

  9. Close curtains and blinds:
The sun's rays convert to heat. However possible, you should block the rays coming into your house to keep the temperature down. Closing curtains, lowering shades, or even blocking windows can significantly reduce the heat in your house and keep it cool.

  10. Go to a cooler place:
Summer vacations are awesome, and you can go to cooler places like mountains or river beds, those are the cool places. You can also go to some area in your country that has a good temperature as compared to where you are.

  11. Give some time to adjust your body:
Travelers often make the mistake of trying to maintain normal levels of activity when arriving in a country warmer than the one they have left. Acclimatizing can take up to 10 days depending on the temperature difference. Rather than pushing yourself, give yourself time to acclimatize to the new warmer environment, which means minimizing physical activity until the heat feels more tolerable.

  12. Pace yourself when working in the heat:
Slow down, it's not worth pushing yourself strenuously when it's hot outside. Start and progress gradually, nothing when the heat is affecting you. Rest is an important way of coping with too much heat. Don't deny yourself the opportunity to rest when you feel fatigued during warm weather.
