Facial Hair
Hair is a product of small pits in the skin known as hair follicles. The most important feature of hair follicles is that their activity is intermittent; each active phase or anagen is succeeded by a transitional phase (catagen) and a resting phase (telogen), during which the fully formed "club hair" is retained for a period and then shed. The growth of facial, body, axillary, and pubic hair depends on androgens. Facial hair and body hair require high levels of testosterone and its conversion to 5-alpha-dihydrotestosterone. Pubic and axillary hair follicles require much lower levels of the hormone, and 5-alpha-reduction appears to be unnecessary. Paradoxically, the male pattern alopecia and its female equivalent also require androgen for their manifestation. The differing lengths of hair in the various regions of the body result largely from differences in the duration of anagen and only to a small extent from differences in the rates of growth.

Why do some women have excessive or unwanted hair?
PCOS (Polycystic ovary syndrome)
When one suffers from PCOS or a hormonal imbalance, the production of the male hormones called "Androgen" in females may go overdrive & result in excess facial hair.

Genetics
Your genetic makeup will determine where and how the hairs will appear on the face. The thickness and density of the hair are also influenced by genetics. if anyone in the family has excess facial hair, you could inherit this from them.

Medications
Excessive body or facial hair growth can also result from medications/ treatments. Anabolic steroids cyclosporine can promote excess facial hair.

Adrenal gland disorders
The adrenal glands, located just above your kidneys, are responsible for hormone production. People with conditions like adrenal hyperplasia, Cushing's disease can affect the way you produce androgens and facial hair

Menopause
Perimenopausal and menopausal women may see new hair growth on their chin, upper lip, ears, and sideburns. This is caused by hormonal changes, including a reduction in estrogen.

Is it normal to have hair on your face?
We all have facial hair, as we have a collection of hair follicles across our bodies. The follicles found on the face, generally grow into hair that is thin, fine & light in color.

For someone who naturally has thicker & darker hair, it may appear more prominent.

Some women have more facial hair than others. The growth of facial hair is influenced by several factors

There are many ways people use to get rid of their unwanted facial hairs like shaving, threading, waxing, laser, depilatory creams, tweezing & electrolysis

Shaving
Everyone thinks using a razor for shaving makes hair grow back thicker but the answer is NO..!!
Shaving cuts the hair right at the surface with the help of a razor or blade this is a very common technique. Shaving does not grow back hair thicker & faster. Do not grow more hair.
Pros - Removes excess hair, debris, oils & dead skin cells.
Cons - Can lead to ingrown hair. Can cause dryness & irritation. Should be done often
Procedure - Use disposable razors or fresh blades. Dull razors can lead to irritation and cuts. Wet your skin first. Hold the razor at a 45°angle in the direction of the hair and gently graze the skin with short, light strokes.
Rinse your skin with cool water to avoid irritation and inflammation.
Apply moisturizer post-shave

Most Common Shaving myths -
Shaving makes your hair grow back thicker and darker- Genetics and hormones impact body hair color, thickness, and growth, not shaving. A razor blade cuts away hair at the skin’s surface, which can make the cut hair appear thicker and darker as they grow back.
Pressing hard on a razor will give you a cleaner shave- Applying too much pressure to your razor blade increases the chances of nicks and cuts. Press lightly on the handle and let the blade do the work for you, don’t put extra pressure.
Shaving every day will damage your skin – How you shave is more important than how often you shave. You can shave every day, if preferred, as long as you do it correctly to safeguard your skin from irritation.
Shaving the same area more than once will result in a closer shave – shaving over the same spot multiple times could irritate your skin. If the first pass of the razor doesn’t give you a close enough shave, change your razor blade.
Shaving will make your tan go away – you will not shave off your tan. Regular shaving can enhance your tan by helping to remove any flaky, dead skin.

Waxing
Waxing removes hair from the root with the help of wax and wax strips.
Hot wax Vs Cold wax – Hot wax removes more hair when compared to cold wax. Cold wax strips should be applied multiple times to remove the same amount of hair.
Pros – Removes the hair from the root. Hair grows back slower when compared to shaving.

Cons – It can burn the skin if the wax is too hot. Not recommended to people who are on medication like Accutane or have sensitive skin.
Procedure – Apply the wax in the direction of hair growth. Place the wax strip and quickly pull off the strip in opposite direction. Get it done from a professional with good technique and hygiene.
Will waxing cause skin sagging?
Waxing may pull the hair from the root of the skin, but it doesn’t pull your actual skin! A thin layer of the epidermis will be removed with waxing, this counts as exfoliation. Sagging is usually a result of aging, reduced collagen, or diet.

Threading
Is threading your facial hair good/bad?
The cotton/polyester thread is twisted and rolled over the unwanted hair.
Threading Vs Tweezing
Tweezing removes the hair one by one whereas threading instead of removing one hair at a time, get broad areas all at once.
Pros – Lasts longer than shaving i.e. (4-5 weeks). You get selective hair removal. Great for eye row shaping. It can be less irritating than shaving. Good choice for upper lips and peach fuzz. Cost-effective. No chemicals are involved.
Cons – Risk of in-grown hair if not done correctly. If you have acne, it can cause bumps to rupture.
Tips – Get it done from a trained person or esthetician. Apply a warm compress afterward

Depilatories
Do depilatories work well for unwanted hair?
These creams have chemicals that break down a protein called keratin in hair, so the hair dissolves and washes away. Do a patch test before using any depilatory cream. Avoid if you see signs like redness, bumps, and itchiness.
Procedure – Apply a layer of cream over unwanted facial hair. Put a timer and allow the cream to sit over the instructed time. If you are using a spatula to remove it, wash it after every glide. Rinse your skin thoroughly. Apply moisturizer.
Tips – Read the instructions very carefully and follow the directions.
Avoid AHA & BHA post-procedure. Do not scrub after using chemical depilatory.

Laser hair reduction
Is laser hair reduction worth it?
In this procedure, the laser emits a beam of light that the pigment in the hair follicle then absorbs and destroys the hair follicle.

What to expect?
There is a reduction in the hair in the treated area. Hair grows back thinner and less noticeable. Typically take 3 – 8 sessions for near-permanent hair removal. Your doctor and specialist will evaluate and give you a better idea of how many treatment sessions you may need. No post-treatment downtime.

Tips – Avoid sun exposure before your session. If you have a sunburn, skip the procedure. Get the procedure done by a board-certified dermatologist. Stay away from waxing and plucking. Skip if you have any kind of infection or if you are on anti-inflammatory drugs. Apply sunscreen regularly.
Downside – it is an expensive treatment and may trigger acne if post-care is not followed.

How to take care of your skin after laser hair reduction?
1) Icing /cold compress – It will help calm your skin post laser session. During the session, heat is passed onto the skin which can make your skin sensitive.
2) Use gentle products – make sure the products are gentle on your skin. Avoid scrubs, exfoliants, and other harsh products.
3) Moisturizer and sunscreen are mandatory – Don’t forget to moisturize twice a day. Also, make sure you apply and re-apply the sunscreen at 8 am, 11 am, & 2 pm.
4) Do not apply make-up – Avoid make-up for few days because your skin is sensitive and you should limit the products you are putting onto your skin.
5) Avoid cosmetic procedure – Threading, plucking, tweezing, and waxing should be strictly avoided. Also do not pick or scratch your skin.
6) Follow your doctor's instructions strictly – follow the instruction carefully and reach out to your doctor if you have any problems.

Electrolysis
Is electrolysis the best hair removal treatment?
An electrode is placed at the opening of the hair follicle that uses shortwave radio frequencies to stop new hair from growing.
Laser hair removal Vs Electrolysis – Electrolysis inhibits new hair growth. Electrolysis would require more sessions than laser hair removal. Electrolysis can’t cover large areas at once like laser hair removal. Electrolysis is less expensive. Electrolysis is a little painful.
