It's not common to see landslides on a daily basis, but if you are caught up in the wrong place at the wrong time, then you need to get out of that situation. Although Natural Disasters cannot be predicted you can take some precautions to be safe if something bad happens.

Let us first try to understand what are Landslides
      Landslides are natural disasters that can occur in any area with steep slopes. Therefore, mountain and hilly areas are more prone to landslides. They can be caused by;

      • Heavy Rain,
      • Earthquakes,
      • Fires,
      • Volcanic Eruptions,
      • Storms,
      • Human Activities like boring
      • Or other events that destabilize the ground.

Landslides are dangerous because they occur suddenly, move quickly, and can travel long distances as well.

      Before a Landslide

      1. Learn about landslide hazards in your area or in the areas that you are traveling to. Local government or disaster response teams are usually the best to get information about landslide-prone areas. Also, when you get information about those areas, it is always better to be away from those areas. Especially in the rainy season or during construction times.

      2. Identify escape routes and safe areas. Make sure you know where to go if a landslide occurs. If you are traveling through a mountain range, ensure that you have sufficient knowledge about the nearest villages or towns form where you can get help during a landslide and also have some contact numbers in hand.

      3. Have an emergency plan in place. This plan should include a way to communicate with your family and friends, as well as a way to get to safety. Keep your family, friends, or local contacts informed about your travel itineraries, so that they can respond to any situation quickly if something like that happened.

      4. Prepare your home. Secure loose objects that could be swept away in a landslide. Also, ensure that you have followed government guidelines to safeguard your home during those calamities.

      During a Landslide

      1. If you are indoors, move to an upper floor or interior room. Stay away from windows and doors. When debris comes, you should not be making videos but should be trying to go upstairs as much as possible so that it may not affect you or else the speed of the debris may sweep you with itself.

      2. If you are outdoors, move to high ground away from the landslide path. If you cannot get to high ground, find a sturdy object to shelter behind. Ensure that you don't shelter yourself under a tree or loosely planted objects as these might hurt you when debris flows.

      3. Protect your head and neck. If you are caught in a landslide, curl up into a ball and protect your head and neck.

      After a landslide

      1. Stay away from the landslide area. There maybe danger of additional landslides because the land is usually slippery and debris might not have settled properly. So it is always better to be away from those areas where a landslide has just happened.

      2. Check for injured or trapped people. If you find someone who is trapped, do not try to move them. Call for help as the debris might injure the person more if you are not careful enough.

      3. Stay informed about the situation. Listen to local radio or television stations for the latest information. You can also try to connect with local police numbers in order to get information about your rescue.

By following these steps, you can increase your chances of surviving a landslide. However, it is important to remember that landslides are unpredictable and there is no guarantee of survival. If you are in the area that is prone to landslides, it is important to be prepared and to take all necessary precautions.

Here are some additional tips for surviving a landslide:

      • If you are driving, pull over to the side of the road and get out of the car. Do not try to outrun a landslide.
      • If you are caught in a landslide, do not panic. Stay calm and focus on protecting yourself.
      • If you are buried, try to stay calm and breathe slowly. Signal for help by tapping on the ground or debris.

Landslides are a serious hazard, but they are not inevitable. By being prepared and taking precautions, you can increase your chances of surviving a landslide.
