Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits

image

The Exodus of Kashmiri Hindus, who are also called "Kashmiri Pandits", is the genocide and then mass flight because of torture and trauma of Islamist Fanatics from the Kashmir Valley in 1990.

Although this was a well-planned event by the separatist groups and people associated with them, in 1989 unprecedented insurgency began in Kashmir. In 1989-1990, calls by Kashmiri Muslims for independence from India gathered pace. Targeted killings and religious discrimination by fellow Muslim communities towards Kashmiri Hindus had shaken the confidence of Kashmiri Pandit society.

Calls were made from Mosques on loudspeakers threatening Pandits to leave the valley and invoking the creation of the Islamic State. Threatening letters were sent to Kashmiri Pandits, and they were targeted and killed as per the list created by terrorists.

In addition, Pandit women were abducted and raped and many Pandit properties were torched. Human Rights Watch reported that Hindu Villagers were massacred and Hindu temples were destroyed by militants.

The Kashmir Files clearly shows the atrocities done by Ismalic terrorists on Kashmiri Pandits. To counter this, even the Wikipedia page on "Exodus of Kashmiri Pandits" has been edited, and more separatist promoting things are added.

Background
Islamic terrorism was being supported and increased regularly by Pakistan and other Islamic forces. Several other incidents happened where Kashmiri Hindus were killed or were evicted from the Indian UT of Jammu and Kashmir.

Induction of Fear
On Jan 4th, 1990, a local Urdu newspaper, Aftab, published a press release issued by Hizb-ul-Mujahideen, asking all Pandits to leave the Valley immediately. Another local paper, Al Safa, repeats this expulsion order. Explosive and inflammatory speeches being broadcast from the public address systems of the mosques became frequent.

Slogans threatening Kashmiri Hindus
Several slogans on the road crowd and also from the public broadcasting system of Mosques were used for threatening;

  • “Zalimo, O Kafiro, Kashmir harmara chod do”.
(O! Merciless, O! Kafirs leave our Kashmir)
  • “Kashmir mein agar rehna hai, Allah-ho-Akbar kahna hoga”
(Anyone wanting to live in Kashmir will have to convert to Islam)
  • La Sharqia la gharbia, Islamia! Islamia!
(From East to West, there will be only Islam)
  • “Musalmano jago, Kafiro bhago”
(O! Muslims, Arise, O! Kafirs, scoot)
  • “Islam hamara maqsad hai, Quran hamara dastur hai, jehad hamara Rasta hai”
(Islam is our objective, Q’uran is our constitution, Jehad is our way of our life)
  • “Kashmir banega Pakistan”
    (Kashmir will become Pakistan)
  • “Kashir banawon Pakistan, Bataw varaie, Batneiw saan”
(We will turn Kashmir into Pakistan along with Kashmiri Pandit women, but without their menfolk)
  • “Pakistan se kya Rishta? La Ilah-e- Illalah”
(Islam defines our relationship with Pakistan)
  • Dil mein rakho Allah ka khauf; Hath mein rakho Kalashnikov.
(With the fear of Allah ruling your hearts, wield a Kalashnikov)
  • “Yahan kya chalega, Nizam-e- Mustafa”
(We want to be ruled under Shari’ah)
  • “People’s League ka kya paigam, Fateh, Azadi aur Islam”
(“What is the message of People’s League? Victory, Freedom and Islam.”)

Night of 19th January 1990
As part of the strategy, then Chief Minister of Jammu and Kashmir, Farooq Abdullah had resigned. This led to utter chaos and the new Governor could not reach Srinagar due to bad weather and had to stay at Jammu. Lawlessness took over the valley and the crowd with slogans and guns started roaming around the streets.

The news kept coming of violent incidents and those Hindus who survived the night saved their lives by traveling out of the valley and becoming refugees in their own country.

Aftermath
Militancy increased after the exodus. Several more cases of such killing and rapes were reported. Kashmiri Hindus continue to fight for their return to the valley and many of them live as refugees.

Most of them lost everything including their property and many relatives to the ethnic cleansing process. Most of them cannot go back to even sell the property.

Few namesake laws were passed to show some progress in rehabilitation but without controlling the terrorism and continued support of Pakistan for terrorists does not allow the Hindus to go back.

In the world, it is the only incident where a majority community had to take refuge with its democratically elected government and cannot return to their nativity. Every year, over the weekend closest to 19th January, worldwide protests are made by Hindus displaced for justice and their safe return to their home land.

Recent Development
Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi removed Article 370 and ensure all citizens of India have equal rights to go and settle in Kashmir. This is one major step in bringing normality to the valley.
