What to do if your WordPress or Elgg Theme Developer stopped supporting and you want to upgrade your server version to PHP 8?
This happens with several web hostings which are usually opensource. For example, Elgg and WordPress are two common examples.
When you use a theme for any of the software platforms, you understand that these are already built and that your Theme Developer will provide updates on a regular basis with bug fixes and upgrade options.
But these days what is happening is that as more and more people are using Low Code or No Code platforms and if the Theme Developer stopped providing the support in that case we are not able to upgrade our server PHP version because we don't know how to upgrade the software ourselves.
Let's discuss how to upgrade our software in these situations.

The best way is to hire a developer who can actually do the coding part and upgrade the obsolete code from the software. He/She might charge a premium, but this is the only way to go ahead.
Or else, you might have to take a backup and then post your content again on the new software you write, but usually it is the slow process and you may end up exhausted as well.
If you know to code or can learn, then you can hand-craft a fix to every depreciated code that there is. You don't have to be careful with new updates as the Theme Developer is not going to update the theme. Even if he does, just ensure that you don't press that upgrade button or remove it entirely after the modifications.
Do create backups before changing anything, and if you can - make all the tests on a staging copy. I usually write down any changes I make and when everything is working like it should, the complete the changes in your live site.
