The Million Dollar Home Page

As the name suggests, 'The Million Dolar Homepage' is a website conceived in 2005 by Alex Tew, a student from Wiltshire, England, to raise money for his university education.

As the above image shows, the home page consists of a million pixels arranged in a 1000*1000 pixel grid, and the image-based links on it sold for $1 per pixel in 10*10 blocks.
The purchasers of these pixels provided tiny images to be put on this website which had a backlink to their website or information about the products that they were selling or marketing.

The website was launched on 26th August 2005 and it became an internet phenomenon. On 1st Jan 2006, the final 1000 pixels were put on auction on eBay and it was promised that the website will be live for 5 years i.e., 2010.

The reason behind building this website:
Alexa Tew thought of creating a website with advertisement space in pixels at the age of 21. He was to begin a three-year Business Management course at the 'University of Nottingham', and was concerned that he would be left with a student loan that could take years to repay.

As a money-raising idea, Tew decided to sell a million pixels on a website for $1 each; purchasers will add their own image, logo or advertisement, and have the option of including a hyperlink to their website. Pixels were sold for US Dollar and the rest is history.

All the pixels were sold in 4 months and it became a news phenomenon. Do you really think he needed a Business Management Course? :D

Well, he raised a sum of $1037100 and his earnings were somewhere around $700000 after paying taxes and other things to keep the website running.

Conclusion:
The moral of this story is that 'you are just one idea far from your 1 million dollars.'

We are not going to debate much about its morality as there might be different ideas about getting rich quickly but the one who is actually feeling it know the pros and cons.
