How to set up a Cosmetic Lab at Home?

image

It is easy to start making cosmetics products at home, but you require basic lab equipment to get started. There are some items you will especially need, as well as some essential requirements for the room you will be working in.

To start making your very own cosmetic products at home, make sure you source the following equipment;

  1. Scale
  2. Stainless Steel Spoons
  3. Disposable Pipettes
  4. Stainless Steel Whisk
  5. Heat/Chemical Resistant Spatula
  6. Stainless Steel Bowls
  7. Safety Glasses
  8. Powder-Free Gloves
  9. PET bottles for buffer solutions
  10. Lids
  11. Stickers to label bottles and jars
  12. pH Strips
  13. Electric Cook Top
  14. Demineralized Water

When you are first starting out making cosmetics at home, your current kitchen will be fine - but if you want to start making more professional and mainstream products, you will need to pay careful attention to your workspace as outlined below.

One of the first things that you need to check is that your working area is clean and dry, and kept that way, every time you are not working on a project. You will be more motivated to work if you will have a clean space for your cosmetics manufacturing.

Workspace

  • Make sure all surfaces are easy to clean, including your walls and floors.
  • You don't need stainless steel benches, but they do need to be durable, easy-clean material that won't harbor dust or debris in little nooks or crevices.
  • Make sure that you have tiles or floorboards that are easy to clean - areas with carpet or rugs in the direct vicinity should be avoided as they can harbor moisture and micro-organisms.
  • Walls with washable paint, tiles, or splashback are more than sufficient.

Air Supply

  • Your product will be exposed to air while it is being made, so you will have to make sure that the air is clean. Usually, there are Air Conditioning and Purifying Systems in commercial labs, but you can choose a well-ventilated area or a close area with a proper air circulation system.
  • Please avoid open windows or fans while making products and use an air conditioner that has a clean air filter inside if you need any sort of cooling or heating.

Water Supply

  • A lot of cosmetics contain water, so you need to make sure that water is of good quality.
  • Purchase small packs of demineralized water from a hardware store.
  • This water is ion and microbe-free when purchased.
  • Once you open the pack, measure out just the water you need and cap it again fast. Only use clean pipettes to measure out your water each time. This will help maintain its purity while you use it.

Storage Area

  • You will have raw materials (ingredients) that you don't use up each time. Store materials in a dry area when not in use.
  • Until you have a dedicated storage space, you may find air lock boxes a great way to store materials dry and safe from moisture and the risk of household rodents.

Handling Raw Materials

  • The types of raw materials you will be working with do not normally pose any significant safety issues, but if you left some raw materials in contact with your skin or any other body part, it can feel irritation, and obviously, a long exposure will be bad for health.
  • Using disposable pipettes will also help protect you from ever touching these materials.
  • Use safety glasses to protect your eyes from any splashes - even organic materials can be irritating to the eyes, so safety glasses are recommended to protect from accidental splashes.
  • A full arm apron is ideal to protect your clothing and hands while working.
  • Ensure that you use a mask to avoid irritation from powers and fumes.

When do we know if our brand is big enough to go mainstream?
Cosmetics products can be manufactured as a hobby as well. You can think about going mainstream and setting up a professional lab if you are selling more than 5 kg of cosmetic products.

This is just a thumb of rule. You can have any number or quantity of cosmetics products, but you should have a steady income and demand from such products to go mainstream.
