Monsoon comes with humidity that is harsh for your hair. It is the worst time for hair health, the monsoon not only makes your hair worse but also your hair looks dry with the sweaty and greasy scalp. Monsoon season is also difficult to manage hair. All the time, we take care of our tresses and oiling, and masking hair goes for a toss as soon as the monsoon arrives. Hair tresses become frizzy and unmanageable. You get sticky hair that all things become annoying.

Now, you think why hair gets frizzy and triggers hair fall during monsoon? First, think, you have to understand this time your hair needs better care.

Why does your hair get frizzy and damaged in humid weather?
Your hair is made up of a protein called ' keratin' and this is how your hair is structured. A million layers of keratin fuse together and make hair cuticles that lie on top of each other and form the hair shaft. Millions of these together make a head hair, but changes to the most minute of these structures can change your hair.

Your hair's outer layer, cuticles are like a roof. When hair is smooth, the roof is flat but when you comb your dry and humid hair, the roof lifts and forms your hair frizzy and also causes hair fall.

Monsoon tends to increase the humidity level in the air around us. This creates a problem for your hair, as it causes a change in the amount of hydrogen present in the air, thereby changing the length of the hair because of moisture.

When it rains the humid air naturally has more water molecules than dry air, and this makes hair strands forming a high number of hydrogen bonds. These bonds make the hair fold back and become frizzy.

Why does hair fall become worse during the monsoon?
Keratin bonds in your strands getting damaged can cause hair breakage, but that’s not the only thing that leads to hair loss during monsoon. Fungal infections on the scalp happen to increase due to more moisture and less sun exposure. These fungi infect follicles and create irritation on the scalp. That also affects healthy hair growth and root, causing hair more prone to hair fall.

This condition affects if your hair is exposed to rainwater. The pollutant in the air mix in rainwater makes your hair damaged and your scalp dirty. Dirty rainwater causes clogging your scalp that isn't healthy for hair growth.

How to prevent frizzy hair and hair fall during monsoon?

  • If your hair gets wet in rain, you wash your hair immediately with shampoo after and let it dry. Shampooing your hair at least 2-3 times during monsoon to avoid the sticky, greasy and sweaty scalp. You need delicate hair care in monsoon season like using mild shampoo and conditioner, which help to nourish your hair and help reduce frizzy hair and hair fall or breakage.
  • Dry your hair right away with a soft towel that absorbs the water very quickly and makes minimum friction between your hair and towel to minimize hair fall.
  • Apply a good conditioner that helps prevent frizzy hair and nourishes your hair and protects hair from fall out.
  • Do oil hair massage gently to avoid breakage. Twice a week is good for nourishment but doesn't do it more often is recommended as your scalp is already oily due to humid weather.
  • Eat a healthy diet and avoid junk food, oily and greasy food during this season. Limit caffeine because it dehydrates and leads to hair fall. Add fresh fruits, leafy vegetables, whole grains, and protein-rich foods to your plate to solve hair fall in the rainy season.
