What are Acne Scars?

People get acne and pimples due to hormonal changes, stress, menses, oil-based cosmetics, or birth control pills. Clogged pores become reddish, swollen, and painful due to a bacterial infection. Further, these acne lesions or breakouts go deeply and damage the underlying skin. Your skin tries to heal these lesions by making new collagen fibers, which may leave a prominent scar or hole behind. It can be more visible when the acne clears.

Types of Acne Scars

The below are the types of acne scars:

  • Atrophic scar:  This scar occurs when there is a loss of skin tissue.
  • Ice pick scar: Scars are usually small and make noticeable holes in your skin.
  • Boxcar scars: They appear in round and oval shapes with sharp edges and look like chickenpox scars.
  • Rolling scar: These scars generally appear in your lower cheeks and jaws where your skin is thicker. The indentations slope and make uneven wavy skin.
  • Hypertrophic or keloid scar: This develops when the skin makes too much collagen to heal acne wounds and causes a mass of raised tissue on the skin. It can be itchy and tender.

Ways to get rid of acne scars at home naturally:

  • Tree tea oil: The spot application of this oil may help to reduce scarring. Because tree tea oil possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
  • Coconut oil: Many studies have revealed that coconut oil moisturizes your skin and prevents acne scars. But if you have extremely oily skin, you should avoid applying it directly. Otherwise, it may worsen the condition.
  • Turmeric powder: It has inflammatory properties that may help to reduce bacterial growth and skin regeneration and reduce scarring.
  • Neem: This may reduce bacterial growth in skin pores due to antibacterial properties.
  • Aloe vera: This regulates melanin production and decreases pigmentation and discoloration.
  • Apple cider vinegar: Diluted apple cider vinegar can help to clear the upper layer of your skin and minimize the appearance of acne scars. However, make sure it is diluted well. Concentrated apple cider vinegar can further damage the face.
  • Lemon and honey: Mixed lemon and honey can be applied to reduce the scars. Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C and helps to maintain a good skin tone. Honey helps to minimize irritation. This combination contributes to your body’s healing process and naturally moisturizes your skin, and stops excessive sebum production. But again, only diluted lemon juice is recommended.
