As Covid-19 struck, many big industries started collapsing, because of which several people went jobless. When people also started selling fruits and vegetables instead of working at a saloon or some other hospitality company, there was time.

It was normal that we all were thinking that this wave will also leave an imprint on what was happening all around the world. But just some months into 2020, and even in 2021, we started facing the Pandemic issue.

In 2021, it seems worse, most of the states were under strict lockdown. Although several states allowed essential services, it usually took time for products and services to reach consumers.

When this all happened, it not only shook the health and hospitality industry but also impacted the Salon industry in the worst means possible.

There were several innovations going on in the salon and cosmetics industry when the pandemic struck and at that time people were also trying to survive. Personal Touch is required in the salon industry, where services are provided with the help of several tools and techniques which are directly used on customers.

Several services provided in Salons across India may involve;

  1. Haircut
  2. Bridal Makeup
  3. Facial
  4. Threading/Piko
  5. Hair Color
  6. Waxing, etc

But as the Pandemic struck, all these activities were on a stand still. People stopped going out, and therefore, they didn't required any of the above services.

Without coming into close vicinity, it is not possible to provide these services, and hence it was something avoided by people all around the world.

Although some local shops were operating with precautions, most of the time people started cutting their hair at home itself so as to avoid any physical contact with other people.

For several years, income per person was increasing and it was expected that people will use some of the disposable income for their personal grooming, but it actually took a downturn and most of the people around the world became jobless and in search of employment, which again resulted in less money in hand to spend on personal care.

Footfalls declined sharply as there were very few social engagements and weddings and that too with limited capacity. To maintain proper social distancing, salons also had to limit the number of clients leading to a huge decline in revenue.

In India, many people opted for Self-Grooming techniques using Youtube and other social media networks and hence this reduced again more traffic to salons across India.

To adapt to this, several salons started providing online services, where people could book experts for haircuts and other cosmetic requirements, which encouraged people to book more appointments.

This gave a bit of a boost to professionals working at salons, and they started making money.

There were several changes included in salon and parlors, like;

  1. Use of Hand Gloves while interacting with clients
  2. Use of Masks while interacting with clients
  3. Extensive training sessions for salon professionals to ensure limited exposure to clients and employees in order to limit infections.
  4. Salons also collaborated with brands to promote one-time-use kits. This helped in reducing transmission of infectious diseases etc.
  5. Also use of e-payments like PayTM, GooglePay, Phone Pay, UPI, etc increased in India to limit the use of cash, which in turn made it safer to transact.
  6. Sanitizers were used on the entrance and for sanitizing all the equipment before use.
  7. Clients were requested to use masks to enter the salons.
  8. Bookings were also taken online or on phone, which helped in reducing the time people spent together.

All of these things required financial assistance, which was taken from their profits, and they could also have not increased their prices as this may have lead to a more downward trend in revenue generation.

With news of rising covid-19 in the country, there is a concern as to how the salon industry will now deal with the challenges especially after the losses that they have incurred. Although professionals have tried to cope with the terms of new normal, it is yet to see how the people working at salons will keep on earning bread for every day.
