There have been several instances when someone tries to do a transaction from UPI payment applications like PhonePe, GPay, PayTM, or even government apps like YONO SBI, and the transaction shows successful, but the receiver says that they haven't received the amount.

I have been receiving several requests to write about the UPI and Online wallet issues that people are facing. I have "n" number of stories, and I am sure you would also have come across stories like these. I am sharing some of the stories and will even try to give you ways to tackle these issues.

Story 1:
There was a person in one of the metro cities in India, who had to visit a Hospital because of some medical emergency, and when he tried to do the payment, his account was debited with a sum of 5k and he received the SMS as well stating that money is debited from the account, but the hospital staff just denied any such payment and started asking for cash.

Well, at the hospital, you are not at your wits, and you usually abide by what they want.

The next day when that person went to SBI and stated that his account has been debited with a sum of 5k, he was told to wait for 5 days as banks reverse any such amount.

After 5 days when that person again visited the Bank, they told me to get the Hospital's Bank Receipt. Now the person went to the hospital's finance team and asked for the Bank statement, for which they told that they only receive the transaction details in excel sheets. So he asked to get it stamped and signed.

After submitting that proof of declined payment, he went again to the bank, and the bank raised a complaint. Well, the person who took the complaint, was a reliever of the permanent staff, who was on holiday, and hence the reliever put the complaint letter in the drawer.

When the person again went to the bank, they apologized because the banks didn't had raised a complaint till that day as well, as his complaint application was piled down under a huge leap of trash papers.

Having said that, they raised a complaint and told him to wait for 15 days, as per their guidelines to resolve the issue. After 15 days, he received an email stating that "Your Complaint Has Been Resolved", which also stated in the mail that if you have any other issue, please contact the phone number of SBI customer care at 1800 1200.

Now, the person again called customer care, and then the customer care people said that they will raise another complaint and that he should wait for another 15 days as per the timeline.

This case is still pending with SBI Bank ...

Story 2:
You all buy groceries from DMart and pay via debit card or UPI. Similarly, one old man purchased some groceries for a sum of 1500 INR and paid using his debit card from J&K bank, which showed that payment was completed but DMart didn't receive the payment.

He again did it and after doing it for the 3rd time, the payment was successful. Only after reaching home, he realized that his account was debited 1500 INR 3 times. That means he bought the groceries for 4500 INR.

He went back to DMart and the people there said that their transactions don't show any payment and that he should talk to his bank itself, and to his surprise, this bank also told him to wait for 5 days and that he will receive the money back, or else they can raise the complaint.

It is still in progress ...

Story 3:
There was another transaction between a supermarket and a person, in which the person's account was debited but the supermarket didn't receive the money. They also asked to check with the bank.

What is common in these stories?
The only thing in all these stories is that all the people who are asking for money, ask the customer or patient to check with the bank as the transaction is 100% failed. They are too confident in themselves that even tell that money will come to their bank account after 2 days, as if they are paying money from their own pocket, and they know the transaction timeline.

Second thing is that banks have become too lethargic. They won't understand how much difficult has it become to make money these days, and because of this, all the people sitting in banks have become intolerant.

They even don't listen to what the customer is saying and they believe they are the boss and the customer is a servant if he or she is asking for their own money.

What to do in these situations?
Ideally, in these situations, you should not pay again. If your account is debited once and you have received an SMS stating that your account is debited with the money, and you can even see the UTR or Transaction Number, don't do the payment again in that case.

Usually, the people who are selling you things ask you to check with the bank later and pay the amount using some other means. But you should not do it.

It is always better to share the UTR or Transaction Number with the salesman, and ask him or her to check with their own bank. It is better to let them do the work because they are not losing anything, and you will obviously pay if the money came back to you, but in most cases, we as a consumer get cheated.

There is one more story;
One day, I bought some groceries from one of the online grocery shops and paid the delivery guy the amount. He went away, and then told me that he hasn't received the money, but my account had already been debited.

Fortunately, I was in another state for some work, because of which I wasn't able to pay much attention to his calls, but I had told him that I will pay again after coming back, and when I came back, he never asked me for the money, because he had already received it in his bank account.

Moral of the story;
Once you have got the Transaction Number, share it with the beneficiary and ask them to investigate.

Ways to safeguard money;
Well, there can be several ways to safeguard your money amidst these frauds. One of them seems to be by using Credit Cards.

Do you have any idea by which these frauds can be reduced?
You can submit your ideas in the comment section below, and it will surely help someone save his or her money in the future.
